PANDORA’S DNA: Tracing the Breast Cancer Genes Through History, Science, and One Family Tree

(Please note: A free copy of the book will also be given away to one attendee!)

About the book: Would you cut out your healthy breasts and ovaries if you thought it might save your life? Breast Cancer is already a leading killer of women in the U.S., but those who carry a hereditary Breast Cancer gene mutation—known as BRCA genes—hold, on average, a staggering 50-80% chance of getting diagnosed in their lifetime. In PANDORA’S DNA, author Lizzie Stark chronicles the history of and science behind the BRCA gene mutations, as well as the taxing personal decisions she has been forced to make as a female in a family full of BRCA mutation carriers—including deciding to undergo a preventive double mastectomy. Much more than just a memoir, PANDORA’S DNA offers, for the first time ever, information on the scientific and medical history, current medical options, and the legal issues surrounding BRCA genes, all presented in a single volume from a journalist who has experienced the ripple effects of these aggressive gene mutations firsthand.

About the author: Lizzie Stark is the author of Leaving Mundania and a freelance journalist who has written for io9.com, The Today Show website, Psychology Today, the Daily Beast, and the Philadelphia Inquirer. She holds an MS in journalism from the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism. She founded and edited the literary journal Fringe. She lives in Boston, Massachusetts.
